Read

Stone by Adam Roberts

I just finished Stone by Adams Roberts it’s hard to make science-fiction about mass murder endearing, very hard, and this doesn’t succeed.  Stone is the story of “Ae”, someone born with little or no empathy, and who after a career of murder in the Utopian society of T’t is put in jail for a long, long, long time. Salvation comes from someone or something who wants to free Ae so she can commit genocide. The story is told in flashback, an interesting technique.  Well written, tightly plotted, but nauseating. The best section of the novel (for me) is the reprint of an essay on quantum physics at the beginning, which without giving anything away is pivotal to the book. Recommendation: read only if you can divorce yourself from the subject matter.

Shout-out

I’d like to give a big shout out to peoples coffee http://www.peoplescoffee.co.nz/ They do fair-trade coffee. That is you might think in itself pretty damn worthy, but just as positive is the fact that it tastes really, really, good. They also now have a cart outside Common Sense Organics during the week, so if you are in Wellington and work up that end of town you should patronise them.
